APSU Govs Former Head Coach Gary McClure Explains 2013 Change of Heart

The APSU baseball team was relieved when head coach Gary McClure withdrew his name from consideration to coach for the University of Iowa.

When Austin Peay State University baseball coach Gary McClure withdrew his name from a 2013 consideration as head coach for his home state University of Iowa, the sudden change of heart prompted speculation. McClure explains it was a personal choice, believing at the time there was more to accomplish on the Clarksville, Tennessee, college campus. A smart choice considering McClure was coming off his third straight Ohio Valley Conference Championship and third consecutive trip to the NCAA Regional. His club had just finished the year with an Austin Peay and OVC record breaking season for wins finishing 47-15. He had also just received news that he was going to be honored by being inducted into the Austin Peay Athletic Hall of Fame.

Gary McClure acknowledges the prospect of going home was very tempting. But when he really thought about it, the 25-year coaching veteran said it boiled down to him being happy right where he was as well as the fact that he was getting ready to reap the benefits of his success from a financial standpoint as well as upgrades to the facility and budgets for the program . McClure, who has since resigned from the Austin Peay State University Athletics department, said he wanted to stay on a while longer to co coach some of the outstanding recruits they had coming in over the next few years due to what they had accomplished over the last few years.

In his nearly thirty years with the Governors (McClure was an assistant prior to accepting the head coach position), Gary McClure made the news more than once for breaking school and division records. He still holds the top spot for most wins in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference. And that’s for every sport, not just baseball. APSU athletics director Derek van der Merwe was understandably elated at the news that Gary McClure would continue on in what would be his the AD’s first year at Austin Peay.

Today, McClure says he’s spending his time watching his son’s coaching career get started and deciding on his own next move. Alex McClure is in his first season as an assistant baseball coach for the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
