About Gary McClure

Gary McClure, field manager for Battle Creek, MI Northwoods League team the Battle Creek Bombers, exhibited a natural talent for baseball from a very young age. By high school, he was a formidable opponent on the field. In college, Gary McClure continued to refine his baseball skills when he attended Southeastern CC in Iowa where he set several records as a second baseman in 1983 and 1984. He then went on to play shortstop and second base at Cumberland University in 1985 and 1986 seasons, under legendary Hall of Fame coach Woody Hunt.

In 1986 after finishing his college career, Gary McClure left Cumberland University and went to Austin Peay where he finished his undergraduate degree and masters along with starting what he hoped would turn into a long coaching career in baseball. Little did Gary McClure know that choice would shape his life and impact his entire career, which would take him from Tennessee to Battle Creek, MI.

As a student  assistant  coach at Austin Peay, Gary McClure worked with Billy Merkel, who would later go on to be a scout for the Oakland A’s. When Merkel left Austin Peay, McClure talked former Athletics Director Bob Brooks into appointing him as the interim head coach for the remainder of that year. After an impressive interim season, Brooks offered the head coach position to Gary McClure. McClure served in this position from 1988 until 2015.

Gary McClure brings nearly 30 years of experience coaching Div. 1 baseball to the Battle Creek Bombers. His expertise is sure to change the face of baseball in Battle Creek, MI.


Gary McClure holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in Health and Human Performance, both from Austin Peay.

Career Highlights

Gary McClure led the Austin Peay Governors baseball team to six NCAA Tournaments. In 2013, the Govs were awarded a number 2 Seed in the NCAA Regional. This was the highest honor ever bestowed by the NCAA on an OVC team. That same year, his team was ranked Top 5 in Mid Major Polls and in the top 25 in all the other major polls. sixty four of Gary McClure’s players have been offered Major League Baeball contracts. So far, five of those players have made it to the big leagues and have had very good careers. McClure has won more games (in any sport) than any other OVC coach in history. In 2016, Gary McClure moved to Battle Creek, MI when he was presented the opportunity to serve as field coach for the Battle Creek Bombers.

Personal life

A dedicated family man, Gary McClure has been married to his wife Amy for nearly thirty years and the couple have one adult son, Alex McClure. Gary McClure is proud of his son Alex who spent time playing professional baseball for the Kansas City Royals and Miami Marlins prior to spending time as an assistant coach at Arkansas State and the university of Memphis. Alex is now a Major League Baseball scout for the Chicago Cubs. McClure spends part of the year in Michigan and the other part in Tennessee.
